JESSE ALEXANDER CLIFTON

Pastor of the Methodist Church of Sumter. Son of Jesse C. Clifton and Mary Walker. Born in Chester, South Carolina. Of Scotch-Irish descent. His father served in the Confederate army. Educated in the Ebenezer High School of York County, under Professor Mathew Elder, and at the University of Virginia. Married Mary, daughter of Dr. W. J. Hicklin. Joined the Confederate army in Company D, First South Carolina Volunteers, Hampton's Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia. Served as courier and scout. For thirty-two years he has been a minister of the gospel. Delegate, twice, to the general conference of the Church. Degree of Doctor of Divinity was conferred by Rutherford College, North Carolina, in 1893.

Rev. Jesse Clifton's brother Lunsford Clifton and his wife Mary Ellen Morris had a daughter named Carrie Clifton who married Moxie Albert Craus they had a daughter named Mary Ellen "Polly" Craus who was an Olympic Fencing Champion.

She worked primarily as a script supervisor for big budget films and award winners such as A Streetcar Named Desire (1951) and All the King’s Men (1949). By 1952 Polly was acknowledged as not only one of the youngest script supervisors but as one of the best and most successful in the industry.

What fun it was to find all these wonderful things. This is why genealogy is so addicting, and once you get down that rabbit hole there isn't any getting out for hour and hours.

  1. Nice post! My husband had an ancestor named Jesse who was a Primitive Baptist minister - Jesse E. Casey. Loved all the photos that you shared as well, especially the photo of Mary Hicklin - gorgeous!
