Louisa Briehl was born in Biedenkopf in the German State of Hesse Darmstadt (see Note 1) on December 22, 1835. Her father’s name was Henry Breihl. Louisa immigrated to the U.S. in 1854. Her first husband was George J. Miller, also from Germany. It is not clear if they came together from Germany or met on the ship or met in Missouri. George can be found in the 1865 and 1867 St. Louis City Directories. He was a boot and shoe maker. He was working at 182 Carr, in 1865, and 615 Cerre, in 1867. The family was living at the same addresses. George died in 1867. George and Louisa had four children:
· Oscar Miller was born in 1857 in Missouri. In 1870, he was working as a clerk in an office. He shows up on the second enumeration of the 1880 US Census living at home on November 9, 1880 and working as an engineer. (He was not there during the first enumeration on June 7, 1880). See notes 3 & 4.
· Pauline Julia Miller was born on May 11, 1860 while the family was in Memphis, Tennessee. She died in Los Angeles, California on October 23, 1943 and is buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California. For additional information, see Pauline Julia Miller O’Donnell Rutledge.
· Emily M. Miller was born in St. Louis, Missouri on October 2, 1863. She died on September 21, 1940 at the Congress Hotel in St. Louis. She is entombed at the Oak Grove Mausoleum in St. Louis. For additional information, see Emily M Miller Brown Fekete.
· Albert J. Miller was born in Missouri on May 6, 1864. He was working as a hotel clerk at the Linmar Hotel when he died on November 24, 1924. He is buried in Valhalla Cemetery, Section 12, Lot 61, Grave 5. For additional information, see Albert J Miller.
Louisa Miller shows up in the 1868 and 1869 St. Louis City Directories as George’s widow, living on the south side of Boston, between St. Louis Ave. and Baltimore. The 1870 Census shows Louisa and the four children living in St. Louis. In late 1870, Louisa married Patrick Ryan. Patrick Ryan was a widower with two children. An old family Bible indicates that they were:
· Mary Ryan; see this death certificate for a possible match.
· Kate Ryan; see this death certificate for a possible match.
Louisa and Patrick had four more children:
· Louisa Ryan was born in late 1871 or early 1872 and died from phthisis pulmonalis (TB) at the age of eight on March 7, 1880. She is buried in Calvary Cemetery, Section 001, Row 14, Lot 000L (see note 2).
· Thomas Patrick Ryan was born on November 6, 1873. His WW1 Draft Registration, signed on September 12, 1918, listed his address as 2082 Greenleaf Avenue in Chicago (with his mother and sister Julia Ryan Kemps' family). He was medium height and build with brown eyes and gray hair. He was a salesman for the Pan. Am. Motors Co. located at 319 Citizen's Bank Bldg. in Decatur, Illinois. He listed his nearest relative as his mother. The 1930 Census found him living in a hotel at Sixth Avenue and Broadway in Little Rock, Arkansas. He was age 56, still single and working as a neon sign salesman. See note 4.
· John W. Ryan was born in 1876. He was married and an insurance agent. He died on December 29, 1916 in the State Hospital in St. Francois County, Missouri. He is buried in Valhalla Cemetery, Section 12, Lot 61, Grave 1. See his death certificate for additional details.
· Julia Ryan was born on March 28, 1879 at 2018 Orange Alley in St. Louis, Missouri. Julia married Luther James Kemps on October 15, 1902. She died in Los Angeles, California on April 6, 1960 and is buried in Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills Cemetery. For additional information, see Julia Ryan Kemps.
In 1880, the family was living at 2018 Orange Alley (between Lucas Avenue and Morgan) in St. Louis, Missouri. Patrick was a horse drawn streetcar operator/conductor with a uniform with brass buttons. There was a winter storm, he did not have his overcoat and he died on December 5, 1881 from rheumatism of the heart. At that time, the family was living at 2207 Lucas Avenue. Patrick was 48 years old and is buried in Calvary Cemetery Section 001, Row 09, Lot 000N, on December 6, 1881 (see note 2).
Albert Miller provided the financial support for the family from 1882 through 1893. The St. Louis City Directories indicate that Louisa, Albert (through 1893), and the three youngest children then lived at the following address:

1887 at 1919 Lucas Ave., along with her daughter, Emily Miller Brown, and her family.

In 1902, Louisa’s youngest child, Julia, was married. Afterwards, Louisa may have lived alone, except as indicated.

1906 at 1463 Arlington Ave., with her daughter Julia’s family (granddaughter, Clara Louise Kemps was born there in 1905).
1906 at 4657A Maryland Ave., with her daughter, Pauline.
1907 at 4722 Kennerly Ave., with her daughter Julia’s family, when her grandson, Samuel Harold Kemps was born.
From 1908 through 1912, Louisa lived with her daughter, Pauline, at the following addresses:
1908 - 1910 at 4657A Maryland Ave.
1910 at 396A Euclid Ave.
1912 at 5739 Wells Ave.
In 1915, Louisa may have been living alone at 5522 North Market.
In 1916, Louisa was living with her daughter Julia’s family at 5355 Theodosia Ave.
In 1918, Louisa was living at 2082 Greenleaf Avenue in Chicago with her daughter, Julia Ryan Kemps and her family (Luther, (Clara) Louise and Samuel). She was no longer there in 1920. In 1921 and 1922, Louisa was back in St. Louis at 1383 Granville Place.
Louisa Briehl Miller Ryan died at the age of 90, on March 13, 1926. At that time, she was living at 1375 Temple Place in St. Louis, Missouri. She is buried in Valhalla Cemetery, Section 12, Lot 61, Grave 6. See her death certificate for additional details.
