"Darius Mead, son of Joshua Mead and Rachel Knapp, of Round Hill, Greenwich, Connecticut was born in Greenwich, July 9, 1787. He was fitted for college under the venerated Isaac Lewis, D.D. whom he ever greatly revered and loved, and to whom he was much indebted for the formation of his character. He entered Yale College in the year 1803, and graduated 1807 at the age of 20. He studied Medicine in Philadelphia under Doctor Rush and received his diploma in 1809, in which year he was married to Lydia K., daughter of Elisha Belcher, M.D. of Round Hill. She died 16 years before him on January 15, 1848. He practiced medicine for a few months in New York, but removed to Greenwich in 1810, settling first in the Old Society, but soon removing hither. He united with this church in 1819, soon after the dismission of Rev. Dr. Lewis, under the pastorate of his son of the same name. In the years 1845-46 he represented the 12th District in the Senate of Connecticut, being nominated without ever seeking or knowledge of the intention. He was a diligent reader of the Bible, and his piety was a deeply settled principle, manifesting itself in a humble, Godly, consistent life, rather than in many words.
