I received a box of letter to my grandfather George Edgar Robertson from his friends & family during WWI. From my Aunt Dolly (Jewell Mary Robertson-Noel). I would like to post them under Military Monday's. These letters are over 90 years old!!!! What a great treasure to be shared with others.

Try to include all the information you have on that ancestor, such as vital records, land records, emplyment, education, military, marriage, church records, If there a date or place thats uncertain use qualifiers.
Be sure to record all your sources such as, my granfather Frederick William Kubberness was born in Lavin, Mecklenburg, Germany. His parent brought him and his sibblings to America in 1888 on a ship names the "Trave" I have 2 sources for this information one is Ancestry.com and Ellis Island.
Once you have all your information compiled you can see which sources have provided the most information and check descreptioncies that you may need to resolve. If you have unsourced information you may want to research that to check for acuratcy.

My ancestor Cicely Neville Dutches of York was born 3 May 1415 and died 31 May 1495. She was a mother of 2 kings Edward IV and Richard III.
She was called "the Rose of Raby" because she was born at Raby Castle in Durham, England. She was also called "Proud Cis" because of her pride and a temper that went with it. Although we have some how changed the spelling of her name she signed it "Cecylle"
She was married to Richard Plantagenet the 3rd Duke of York who was killed in the Battle at Wakfield 31 Dec 1460.
Her parents were Ralph Neville & Joan Beaufort, She was Countess of Westmorland.
I find Cicely captivating, very little is known about her family. But she seemed to of been a strong women with opinion that women of that time were not to express. She is very intriguing to me. I love women who can be out spoken but still be a Lady.
I couldn't imagine being a mother to one king let alone two. What a remarkable event in her life.
I have posted a picture of her below and some clothing of that era, somethings she may have wore in her day.

I received these letters from my Aunt Dolly (Jewell Mary Robertson) Noel. My grandpa George Edgar Robertson was in WWI and the box of letters I have are correspondence from his friends and family. I have chosen Military Monday's to post all these letters. They are such a treasure I feel I need to post them to share with others. These letter were unknown to us and sat in this box for over 90 years.

When I was a young girl about the age of 8, my family moved from Aberdeen, SD to Stockton, CA to live in my Grandmother Dorothy's house for a year while she traveled around the United States, Hawaii, and Mexico.
I loved to play dress up, of course what girl didn't. My Gram-ma would let me try on her fancy dresses and play with her jewelry, make, and perfume. I had such a lovely time at her house and with her. I grew very close to her. I have posted pictures of her bedroom suit that I would play with. Her vanity and dresser where her clothes and jewelry were. I will always treasure those special moments with my beloved gram-ma. She was a beautiful women from the inside out!

I am so thankful I was surfing the net one day and came across this free download for Windows Journal. I use this for my blog, for story ideas, for my favorite quotes and pictures of things I like that I find on the web.

It took me a few try's to figure out that I could type in the journal because when you first open it there's a pen, I failed miserably at using that, my writing looked like I was back in pre-school. Then I accidentally right clicked on a page and saw text box, I started typing into the box and I became hooked, it's so easy.

It will have your hand from writting down everything and your pocket book from the cost of photo copies, so it may well pay for it self in the long run. Look at there website for other useful tools that may help make things easier for your endeavor.

My advice to beginners would be to invest in the Family Tree Maker software, available at Wal-Mart, Staples, Office Depot and so on.

Next subscribe to ancestry.com, On this website you can download and print out charts and forms you will need to start with. They also have classes you can learn from to get started.

Then I would get hanging files and number them according to your pedigree chart. For instance you would be number one, your dad number two, your mom number three and so on. Use these number for easy acess. Also get regular file folders to put into the hanging folders. I use these to keep my notes in and my internet logs, correspondence logs and list of websites I have looked up information on. Then I use colored file folders for the children of that person and number them with my main chart number and the birth order they are in, for example, my dad Donald Kubberness is #2 so the file I would hhave for my brother would be #2-3 because he was the 3rd child born to this family.

Next I keep index cards alaphibetically by last name in the left hand corner like this Kubberness, Donald then I put his chart number in the right hand corner, I also have colored ones for his children number like I mentioned earlier. On these index cards I keep all the records I have gathered and their source. Example: 1930 Census Record Kingsbury County, S.D.>ancestory.com

If it's a photo I will put what the photo is and who gave it me.

This will help to keep your family history organized and help you from searching for the same things twice, I had to learn the hard way.

One common mistake beginners make is not interviewing family members, the older ones especially.

Start with your oldest relative and set up an interview, if they live close by do it in person. Video tape it if possible. Have your questions written out before you get there. Don't just ask for names & dates include churches they belonged to organizations, employment, their favorite memory, what it was like growing up where they grew up. Have them show you old photo's, memorabilia.

There are loads of book, articles and websites you can look at for ideas on how to do inviewing. This is most important. My great aunt Bessie and I coresponded but if I would of thought a head I would of called her and interviewed her, now that she's passed away so has the oppertunity. So plunge into it and do a good job and you will have a great family history to share with loved ones and others 20 years from now will be thankful to know that person, even from a video.

Aseneth Moore was born 1 Feb 1777 in Maryland, died 16 Jan 1863 in Marion County, WV at age 86. She married William Cunninham 17 MAy 1801 in Harrison County, WV. They had 12 children. The first child was born 1802 when she was 25 years old and the last child was born in 1819 when she was 42 years old.

I could not imagaine having a child at age 42 Wow, she must have been a strong women.

   My Grandmother Dorothy Couch-Robertson had these beautiful tea cups. My Aunt Dolly Noel was nice enough to give them to me when my mom & I traveled to Stockton, California in June of this year.
   My beloved Grandma wasn't one to keep these tea cups in a china hutch and get full of dust, no, she used them and when her grandchildren came over we would get to have hot tea in them. A memory I am very fond of.

I think King Henry VIII grew tired of her and people lied about her and stabbed her in back to get rid of her. She had intentions of being his mistress like her sister Mary, she meant to be his Queen. But whatever the truth is, she had to be scared to death.I feel for her, poor thing.

Their son was John Conyers born 1370 at Hornby Castle in Yorkshire, England and died 1429. He was married to Margaret St. Quintin born in 1380 in Brandsbutton, Yorkshire, England, died 1429.

     My Momma is the best in all the world. She has taught me how to be a giving and kind person. To always have God in my life and to forgive no matter what. To have unconditional love for everyone and never to judge others. I was raised to never see the color of someones skin but to look into their heart as a person and child of God.

   My dad was never home much due to making a living to provide for us. I have no idea how my mom raised us three kids with little money and mostly alone, but she did. She has been a big part of every church we've ever gone to and every community we have lived in.
   She was in Sweet Adelines, she started Holy Fools which was a group of clowns that clowned around for Christ at McCabe United Methodist Church, She even got 2 Governor's to declare April 1st as Holy Fools Day and got her picture taken with them and put into our local paper.
   She has been a huge part of the Red Cross in Peru, IL. First being a volunteer then training as a disaster worker and then doing the meals program. She was so good at it their hired her. But now with cut backs she's losing her job in September. I am sad for her, she loves that job plus it gives her and dad extra income.
   My mom had us kids involved in things as well. We took swimming lessons, got involved in school plays and church. Helped with the elderly. We were in Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts.
   My mom also gave us memories of special times that were rather amazing. When we lived in Garden Grove, CA. Mom was in charge of the youth group and planned "Surprise Days" once a month we went somewhere special on a bus. Once we went to Disneyland, Sea World, Knotts Berry Farms. It was a true kids adventure.
   My mom also took us traveling, we took the Amtrak Train from Aberdeen, SD to Stockton, CA a 3 day trip. The conductor became my new best friend and I sang "This Little Chicky" and he gave me an Amtrak bag, I was super happy about that.
   Once my mom and her mom Dorothy took us to the Red Woods and Columbia, CA and panned for Gold. Now what kid can say that?
     We always watched tv and movies together as a family, we always ate our meals together as a family. Holidays and birthdays were always a big deal and celebrated with a bang.
   During all this time my mom always worked. She did Meals On Wheels, took care of several elderly people. She cleaned houses for people. I do not know how she did it all.
   She is 76 years old and is still clowning, working her job at Red Cross, works as an Usher at their local play theater. Is an election judge, involved in her church with many activities and takes care of 2 grandchildren on the weekends. She helped Gary Dahl with his campaign for State Senate (Illinois). He won by the way! My folks went to the Inauguration Ball

Yeppers that's my momma!!!!!

   In June of this year she had saved enough money from working to fly us out to California for a week to visit our family. That trip was a true blessing from God for both of us. We have become even closer and have a bond that's unbreakable.
   I love my mom with all my heart. That's something else she taught us, how to share our feelings, don't be afraid of getting hurt, if you do time will heal, if you don't your not living a full life that God has meant for you to live.

Are you struggling with a Brick Wall?

I would like to help you get rid of a few of those bricks.
   Let's look at some other information that may help knock our genealogy walls down and a few less bricks in the wall the better, Right!!!!
   Let's talk Homestead Records. Did you know President Lincoln signed the Homestead Act in 1862? This gave 160 acres of free land to men age 18 and older. But the person had to agree to cultivate the land for at least 5 years.
    Let's look at nonpopulation census. These are very informative when it comes to farming and manufacturing in the USA. It can give you clues as the types of bussiness were in your ancestor's community.
    Agriculture Schedules can give you insight to your ancestor's farm, You can learn what produce they planted or livestock they owned.
    Coroner's Records are a wonderful source, did your family member die from uncertain or unusual circumstances? like an accident like being burned, drowning, drug overdose, mine explosion, suicide, murdered, or criminal negligence?

I hope these tips will help make your brick wall a little shorter, and help you find more clues about your family and who they were.

I posted a letter that was my Great- Grandfather from his sister. Since the posting of that letter my distant cousin, Jennifer Woods &I have discovered more clues to our Robertson line.

Bessie's name is acually Dessie Anna Robertson-Warren, the author of the letter. Which lead us to some of her children and grand children that had been missing.

Dessie Anna Robertson was born 9 Nov 1873 in Washington, Adams, Iowa, She died 22 Oct 1943 in Cresco, Howard, Iowa. She married Dana Wyan Warren.

A Letter From The Past, A Treasure For Today!

As I have said before, my Aunt Dolly Noel gave me a box full of old letters to my grandfather George Edgar Robertson. I started scanning them into my laptop and as I did this I reade them. There are letters to him during WWI, from his folks, cousins, siters and brothers, friends. I was scanning a certain letter and noticed it was to his father John Edgar Robertson from a sister. There is a lot of genealogy information in this letter and I would like to share it here with you.

I recieved a wonderful gift from my Aunt Dolly, a box filled with letter to my grandfather while he was in WWI. I have posted one here and will continue to post them every monday until I have them all posted. I hope you enjoy them as much as I have. I never knew my grandfather, we had never even met. But through these letters I can tell what kind of a man he was and how well loved he was by his family and friends.

This letter is George Edgar Robertson from his father John Edgar Robertson, while he was stationed in Waco, Texas, the letter is dated July 15, 1918.

William Montgomery Barnett born abt 1814 in Illnois, married Martha Polly Ann (Mary) Thompson born & died Illinois. The 1850 census for Randolph County, IL has William at age 56 and a farmer. It's the only document I have and this is all the information I have. So my mystery is finding his birth place in Illinois, his death and marriage information and his wife's. I would say the size of this brick wall I can not even climb and will some time to knock them bricks out of my way. But as a determined genealogist nothing will stand in my way way for long, I will climb over it, dig under it or find a way around it. My search will go on and I will find my pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

I have an ancestor who is very much a mystery to me. Is name is Alexander Cown Robertson. He was born somewhere in Kentucky according to his death certificate. On 8 July 1838 Kentucky. died 20 May 1896 in Sioux City, Iowa. Buried 23 May 1896 at the Eberly Cemetery outside Sioux City, IA. He was a Constable for 2 terms there. He married 23 December 1863 to Elizabeth Jane Cavit born 28 Aug 1843 in Beaver Dam, Pa and died 8 Feb 1903 in Sioux City, IA.

Alexander's parents were John Edgar Robertson born 10 March 1804 somewhere in Kentucky and died in 1876 in Washington, Adams, Iowa. He was married 20 Jan 1831 somewhere in Kentucky to Abigail Cowen born 13 Nov 1812 place unknown, died 22 Jul 1838 possibly from child birth.

Ok smarty pants lets see who can help solve this mystery. I would love to know where in Kentucky these gentlemen were born. I have also hit a wall trying to fin Abigail Cowen's parents. her birth place and death place in Kentucky. This Kentucky line has been a thorn in my side for many, many years. I am hoping someone out there can help find the information i need to more forward (in genealogy I guess we move backwards).

Caroline Weyand/Wyant/Weiands
Was born in Germany and died in Moniteau County, MO. She was married 12 May 1829 in N Dehlenteth, Germany, to Henry Conrad Becker. They had 8 children. I have very little information on Caroline. I have a transcription of a page that was in the family Bible, which I poosted here. And a Becker family photo also posted. I would love to know her birthdate and death date. Her parents names would big a big plus. So there you have it. One more brick wall for me to knock down.

Ruth Gwendola Converse-Kubberness

More strong women in my line:

Ruth Gwendola Converse- Kubberness was my grandmother, my fathers mother (Adoptive). She had a huge influence on my life. She was a very big part of my life for the first 8 years of my life.

My grandma died when I was 8yrs old. She was everything to me and I grieved her lost.I remember when she was sick and visiting her in the hospital she would see bugs everywhere and we made a game of chasing them away for her. During her funeral I approached the casket as looked at her thinking she was just a sleep and I reached out and touched her hand and kissed her cheek, her sweet smell and warmth I was so familiar with was gone. As I watched the casket being lowered to the ground I realized the words that my momma said to me, "Grandma is gone baby she's in heaven."
Soon after she died we moved to California and I missed her so much I would cry myself to sleep every night. One night she appeared before me and told me not to cry, she was in heaven with grandpa and I would see her again someday. She told me my parents would take good care of me and that I would be ok. I never cried for her again but I still miss her deeply and I have wonderful memories. By moving to California I got to meet my maternal grandma and I got close to her fast. She was also an amazing women I admired her strength and her beliefs in God. I have wonderful memories of her as well ad she is also greatly missed. I am very luck to of had these women as my grandmothers. I Love them still.

Louise "Lucy" Teresa Becker

Louise "Lucy" Becker was born 17 May 1874 in Tipton, Moniteau, MO, died 28 Jan 1950 in Tipton, Moniteau, MO. She was married to Louis Gustaw Imoff born 1877, died 15 Apr 1956 Tipton, Moniteau, MO.

I have not found any information on Lucy that she was ever married or had children. The search still continues on those events of her life. Although in my research there is a Imoff who married a Becker female, He was a local undertaker who worked with a Kuttenkuler who owned the local Ambulance service. Kuttenkuler is Lucy's mom's madien name.

So as I find these link to my holes in this wall I will keep you posted. As for now we will focus on Lucy. Her parents were John henry Becker and Margaret Helen Kuttenkuler. In 1920 Lucy lived with her brother John Conrad Becker in Carrollton, Caroll, MO according to the census of that year. I will have to do some further investigating on this matter.

Most Haynie researchers agree that the Haynie family can be formally traced to Capt. John Haynie and, some believe that Capt. John was the progenitor of the Haynie Family in America. However, there is evidence that supports the belief that the Haynie family was established in America by John Hayney who was born in England in about 1594. John Hayney came to the American Colonies on the ship "Margett and John" in 1621.1 He gave his age as 27 which would place his birth date about 1594. He appears in the referenced Index again with a date of 1624, age 272 and is first mentioned in Virginia land records in 1632:3

Was leased by Francis West 10 Dec. 1627.

John Hayney married Elizabeth Hayney who was born about 1581 and came to the Virginia colony on the ship "Abigail" in 1622; the ship record did not give her age. However, in a Northumberland County Court in April 1635, Elizabeth proved her age to be 54 which would make her some 13 years older than her husband.4 John and Elizabeth were probably married soon after her arrival in Virginia, or about 1622-23. This would allow for the birth of a son, also named John, in about 1624 which is believed to be Capt. John Haynie. A search of the records at the Virginia State Library found very few records covering the period 1621- 1650 and no record was found of the marriage of John Hayney or the birth of Capt. John Haynie.

Some Haynie researchers believe that Capt. John Haynie was born in England5 and that he came to America in about 1650 and, there are two references that are consistently used to support this belief. The first is in the Index of Immigrants and Naturalizations.6 Some believe that this reference proves that John Haynie immigrated to America in 1650, when actually the reference states that "he was an original grantee for 950 acres on 20 January 1650." The second reference used is in a 1991 Supplement to the same Index, which makes reference to a John Haynie as "a founder of a colonial family living in Virginia in 1650." 7 Neither reference gives a date of immigration, or the name of a ship, or a port of arrival.

In July of 1993, the records at the Virginia State Library in Richmond were searched for early records on Capt. John Haynie. The earliest record found was when Capt. John Haynie and others signed an oath of allegiance to the Commonwealth of England on 13 April 1652.8 This record also leads many to believe that Capt. John Haynie and the other signers of the oath had just arrived in the colonies, however, this is not proof. Research shows that this was a troubling time for England because she was without "King or House of Lords" and was primarily interested in ensuring the loyalty of the colonists. As an example, take the case of Nicholas Morris who also signed the oath to the Commonwealth of England on 13 April 1652. The evidence indicates that the Nicholas Morris family moved to Northumberland County, Virginia from Maryland in about 1650. 9 The Nicholas Morris family was another prominent Virginia family and a large land owner. The Morris and Haynie families are connected through the marriage of Jane Morris, daughter of Nicholas, to Capt. John Haynie.

After considering all of the available records, it is believed that Capt. John Haynie was actually born in Virginia, and that his father was John Hayney who immigrated to Virginia in 1621.

Sundays are mine and Christopher's special days, He spends the night Saturday and Sunday we get up and go to church (McCabe United Methodist Church in Bismarck, ND). Then we come home and change and eat then it's fun time at the park. (weather permitting). Or building a tent out of blankets in the living room. This weekend we made sugar cookies with falgs on them for 4th of July! Oh what fun we had. And built the tent in the living room, watched movies and played with his Super Hero guys he just loves, what a cheap fun time, they were only $5 at Wal-Mart.

Sir Oliver St. John, 1st Earl of Bolingbroke was born circa 1584.1 He was the son of Oliver St. John, 3rd Baron St. John of Bletso and Dorothy Read.1 He married Elizabeth Paulet, daughter of William Paulet and Elizabeth Codingham, in April 1602.2 He died in June 1646.2 He died intestate and his estate was administered on 3 July 1646.2 He died intestate and his estate was administered on 13 November 1655.2
Sir Oliver St. John, 1st Earl of Bolingbroke was invested as a Knight Bachelor on 3 June 1610.1 He succeeded to the title of 4th Baron St. John of Bletso in September 1618.2 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Huntingdonshire in 1619, jointly.2 He was created 1st Earl of Bolingbroke [England] on 28 December 1624.2 He was Joint Commissioner of the Great Seal between 1643 and 1646.2 He was a Commissioner of the Admiralty between 1643 and 1646.2 He was Member of the Assembly of the Divines between 1643 and 1646.2 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Bedfordshire in February 1642/43, appointed by the Parliamentarians.2

I was walking around Barnes & Noble looking at the genealogy books of course, and came across this one. I love the series so much I just had to buy the book. I am Glad I did!

The beginning starts you out with preparing your family history and how to start the hunt. The chapters to follow list many wonderful resources on the web like Cyndi's list, and footnote, just to mention a few to help with your searches. There's chapters on census, vital records, and even going as far back as the Old Country.
This book is a very easy read and for those just starting out it has simple language and how to. As far as the more experienced genealogist there's chapters for you too. Like DNA, which I am going to do in the very near future. Also how to find clues and intrepid them. The end of the book has a chapter on how to get your family history into book form, which is something I have been meaning to do.

I strongly suggest this book to each and every genealogist out there, rather your just starting or have been doing genealogy for years like me. Megan Smolenyak is a wonderful writer/genealogist, I love her work. If you love this TV series you will want the book!

Dorothy Couch-Robertson

Dorothy Couch- Robertson my maternal grandmother was the most loving, kind, gentle, religious women I will ever know. I am very thankful she was a part of my life. Let me tell you about this remarkable lady.

She loved to cook and I would get to help. Before I was born she always fed the friends of her six kids. Her home was the local hangout for the kids in the neighborhood. But lets back up even further. She could fix anything and can. She had a garden every place they lived.

Dorothy was born 8 Jan 1903 in Elgin, Antelope, NE. She was about 6 years old when her father was accidentally shot and killed by her brother passing him a shotgun through a fence.
She went all the way through school, plus normal school, where she learned to be a Secretary. She went to work for Davidson's Furnature Store, where George Edgar Robertson worked after he came home from the war in 1919. He had been in the hospital in France because he was wounded in 1918 by muster gas. In 1920 Dorothy and George started dating, much to the chagrin of her mother Cora Alice Amick-Couch. Cora raised her kids in the Nazarene Faith. And George was CaCatholic. But five days after Dorothy's 18th birthday they married, 13 Jan 1921 in Sioux City, IA, where her family moved after the death of her father.

During the Great Depression her children were scattered around to different family members, because George got laid off for a year.

I couldn't imagine the pain she felt having her family scattered about, they were everything to her.

In 1962 Grandpa became very ill and went to the Veterans Hospital in Livermore, CA where he died from emphysema. He had lost one lung from mustard gas during the war, and smoked all his life. He was tough though, he made it to age 68.

My beautiful Grandmother Dorothy was taken 9 April 2001 in Stockton, CA. It was very hard for me when my mom called me to tell me. I was in Mandan, ND and had no means to get out to California for the funeral. So I never got to say good-bye.
On a recent trip to Stockton I was at my Aunt Dot's where my gram ma spent the last few years of her life. I was hit hard with the realization of her truly being gone. Her stuff was still there just as she had left it. I got very emotional and quietly by myself talked to her as I slid my hand along some of her furniture and things. I took lots of photos.

She taught me to be a strong women, keep true to my faith and love my family no matter what. My grandmother lived to be 98 years old, she had a long full life, touched very much by God.

Sometimes I find it rather hard to be motivated in doing my blog on a daily basis. First I have no internet, so I know find myself at Barnes & Nobles Starbucks using their WiiFii. I love the coffee!

So now the challenge is carring my laptop and files there to work on my blog. I bought a really cool hanging file folder bag at Wal-Mart, got pink cause there was no purple (so sad).

So I gather up my stuff in my new bag, like my genealogy research, and my blog notebook that I wrote in the day before with my theme all ready to blog.

With my pen in hand I write down all the information usually from my Family Tree program.

I feel I have an obligation to my followers to not only post often but write better. So I have to keep myself focused and organized. So that's my Tuesday tip to myself. Here's looking at better blogging!

Dorcus Chester is a new find of mine. I was tickled pink to find her plus the photo on Ancestry.com.

Dorcus was born 1 November 1637 in Wethersfield, Hartford, Massachusetts, died 15 February 1712 in Billerica, Middlesex, Massachusetts. She married Rev. Samuel Whiting Jr. Date unknown. They had children.

Dorcus is from a long line of weathy "Chester men" that owned many acres of land in England and in America.

Christopher and I have special time on Sunday's. He spends the night at Nana's every Saturday and on Sunday's we go to church together (McCabe United Methodist Church in Bismarck, ND).

After church we go home and change and then weather permitting we go to the park and play. If it's raining, snowing or cold out we spend the day making hot cocoa and playing games or watching one of his favorite movies all snuggled up on the couch together. We have also built a tent with blankets and got flash lights out to play in his tunnel.

Christopher and I have a very special bond I raised him the first year and a half of his life. I am thankful that God has given me this "Little Man" he is loving, kind, generous, and caring and he's only 4 years old. Thank you God for making me his Nana.

Mrs. Margaret Becker, wife of Henry Becker, was born in Cologne, Germany, September 18, 1838; died in Tipton, Mo., September 25, 1915, being 77 years and 7 days old at the time of her death.
Mrs. Becker's maiden name was Kuttenkuler. She came with her parents from Germany to Missouri about 64 years ago, locating in Moniteau county, near this city, her family being the first German settlers in this county.
On January 2, 1858 the subject of this notice became the wife of Henry Becker. To this union eleven children were born, eight of whom with the husband, survives. They are: Chas. Becker, of Kansas City; H.J., Joe L. Becker of St. Louis; Mrs. Mary Robertson, of Sioux City, Iowa; Mrs. Anna Mudd, of Arkansas; Mrs. Ellen Koechner, Mrs. Louis G. Imhoff and Miss Lucy Becker, of this city. Besides these are one brother, John Kuttenkuler, of this city, and two half-brothers, P.J. and Andy Bestgen, of near this city.
Mrs. Becker spent a long and useful life, true to husband, devoted to her children, loyal to friends and faithful to her church vows.
On January 2, 1908 Mrs. Becker and her husband celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, of which an extended notice appeared in the TIMES at that time. She and her husband have resided in Tipton for 43 consecutive years. Interment was made in the Catholic cemetery at 11 o'clock September 27, the following being pallbearers: P.C. Flood, P.J. Franken, Jacob Heinen, Wm. Kline, Peter Dick and Joseph Sommerhauser.

I received the most wonderful gift from my Dad Donald "Kub" Kubberness, most people wouldn't think so unless they were a genealogy buff, like I most diffidently am.

He gave me a recipe book called Rebeccah Circle 1972 a group of women from United Methodist Church of Arlington, South Dakota.

It's filled with recipes from family members!!!!! Can you believe that! I was so surprised and excited. So here is my first recipe from the book by my Great- Aunt Bessie Converse-Damm.

Mashed Potato Donuts
By Mrs. Clarence Damm

1 1/4 cup sugar 1/4 cup butter
1 cup cold mashed potatoes, or us can use instant
3 beaten eggs 1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp soda 1 tsp nutmeg
3 heaping tsp baking powder
1 cup buttermilk 4 cups flours
beat eggs, stir in sugar, butter, and potatoes, whip until creamy, sift dry ingredients, add buttermilk to egg mixture, mix well. Chill 2 hrs roll 1/2 in thick, cut out and fry in deep fat.

He married Lucy Ann Wilkinson date and place unknown at this time. She was born 14 Jul 1849, Wisconsin, died 22 March 1882 place unknown at this time. (My 2nd great-grandmother on maternal line))

While on vacation I received a gold mine, my Aunt Dolly noel handed me a box full of letters, to my grandfather during WWI, from his folks, sister's, brothers, uncle, friends, cousin. May 24, 2011 I drove from Bismarck, ND to Peru, IL, to my folk's home. My mom had saved her pennies so that she could go to California and see her family. My dad didn't want to go so Momma asked me. Oh what a blessing that was.

We flew out of Midway on May 31st and landed in Sacramento, CA, where my Cousin Claire and Aunt Dolly picked us up at the airport and took us to Stockton where my Aunt lives. We spend a few glorious days with my Aunt and visited my other Aunt Dot and her husband Jim. It was wonderful re-connecting with family. I hadn't been there since May of 1984.

It was amazing how my Cousin Claire and I put the gap of time behind us and picked up right where we had left off some 30 years before. She is a very beautiful Lady. I also re-connected with my Cousin Germaine (Claire's Sister). She is also very special. My Aunt Dolly had 11 children and I asked her if she was close to them she said "yes each and every one." Wow that's really awesome. God surely has blessed her.

My sweet Cousin Claire got my mom and I tickets for San Fransisco for June 2nd and we took the Amtrak Train from Stockton to San Francisco, which was a 2 hour drive and we met a wonderful man named "Mark" who races sailboats.

Our day in San Francisco was like magic, mom and I had never been on a trip alone together and this time was much needed for both of us. We truly had a blast. (See photo's). Our trip back to Stockton on the train was another blessing from God we met a man from Nazareth, who's a Christan Jew. We had a wonderful talk of faith. He's now my friend on Facebook.

Friday June 3rd my Aunt Lou came from Auburn, CA and picked us up and took us to the Jelly Belly Factory. WOW!!!!!!! What fun!! Her son designed the grid for Jelly Belly Computer system to run all the equipment. I have very smart cousin's.

Then we went to my Aunt's house but she ended up sick and had to go to the hospital. She is much better now. Mean while we stayed at my Cousin Delynn's with her family. What a treat that was. We got to taste African Coffee her son sends her from his mission trips from all over the world. Yummy! Thanks Zack!!!

I mom and I were completely spoiled by Delynn her husband Wolfgang and their beautiful kids. This family has the blessing of God with in them and all around them.It sure deepened my faith. They took us to a place called the Biblical Gardens which really touched my soul. We went to the movie Soul Surfing which is a must see movie, you will laugh, you will cry, but you will be amazed by this girl and her faith, Oh by the way it's a true story.

Our time came to an end on June 6, 2011 we boarded the plane and headed back to Midway (Chicago, IL). My dad and brother Rick picked us up from the airport and mom and sat in the back seat telling them about our trip and how God had truly blessed us.

I left Peru, IL on June 15th and drove back home to Bismarck, ND

Thank you God for blessing me with an Amazing trip, an Amazing family, and most of all for giving me the most wonderful Lady in the world for my Momma! AMEN.

8 Hours after her son was killed by a lightning strick, Margaret died, possibly because she was so distraught over the death of her son.

She was married twice: John Peter Bestgen & Henry Kuttenkuler.

My daddy got this plane when I was 6 years old. He use to take my brother Rick and I up in it and we thought it was so cool see all the little houses and roads and cars. it looked like a little play town.

He would go threw the clouds and we thought we clould reach out and touch them cause they looked like cotton.

He would tip us up-side down and do loop to loops. This is one of many fond memories I have with my daddy.

I have been researching my dad's biological family history as well as his adoptive side. I previously posted my dad's adoption papers. I have a copy of his birth certificate, oddly it lists his biological mother's name. His parents never kept the truth from him. He has always known he we adopted, along with his sister Betty who is not biological. I will start with his mother and her parents:

Dorothy Mary Peters was born 13 June 1914 in Sheridan, Wyoming, and died 6 January 1989 in Merced, California. My dad's father is unknown.

Her parents were Martin Richard Peters born 22 October 1878 in Barton, Washington, Wisconsin. Died 19 September 1947 in Edgemont, Fall River, South Dakota, He was buried 22 September 1947 in the Edgemont Cemetery.

He married on 27 January 1910 in Sheridan, WY, to Mary Louise Sack who was born 25 February 1887 in St. Marys, Kansas and died on 18 January 1972 in Topeka, Shawnee, Kansas. She is buried in the Edgemont Cemetery.

Martin Richard Peters Parents:
John Arnold Peters born 20 Dec 1840 in Dusseldorf, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, died 1908. Married 16 February 1862 to Dorothea Mae Kneck who was born 15 August 1842 in Maeienbaun, Germany, died 30 March 1886. That ends my Peters line so far.

Mary Lousie Sack's Parents:
John Sack born 14 May 1856 in Russia, died December 1941, Married Mary Maria Graf (date and place unknown). She was born 5 March 1866 bern, Switzerland. Died 12 Aug 1937 in St. Marys, Pottawtomie, Kansas.

I am going to change this around a little instead of giving wisdom I am going to ask for some.
I have been working on my Robertson/Cowen line for some time and still haven't found the Cowen line. Here is what I have so far. (These are my 3rd Graet-Grandparents)

John Edgar Robertson born 10 Mar 1804 in Kentucky (from 1860 Morning Sun Twp Census IA). He died 1876 in Washington, Adams, Iowa. Married on 20 jan 1831 KY to Abigail Cowen/Cown. She was born 13 Nov 1812 place unknown. Died 22 Jul 1938 in KY.

Their children:

Alexander Cowen Robertson b.8 July 1838 d. 2o May 1896 in Sioux City, Woodbury, IA (my 2nd great-grandfather)

Mary Frances Robertson b. 2 Feb 1832 KY, Was married a Glenn, Child: Zelda A. Glenn

Raphael Ann Robertson b. 5 Nov 1833 KY, died Mar 170 in Louisa, IA. Married William L. Linn

Hugh Mayne Robertson b. 13 April 1836 d. 12 July 1863 due to a shell that exploded during the Civil War.

I would like to find out who John Edgar Robertson's parents were and Abigail's Parents.

Some think that purhaps her name was Mary S Abigail Cowen because of the 1860 Iowa Census record. I am not sure. I have lopoked on Ancestry.com and found different variations. In the 1870 Washington County, Iowa census only list's John no wife but Mary Glenn his daughter and grandaughter Zeldia Glenn (This is the spelling they show) are listed and Alexander and his household are also listed in this census.

He enlisted in the Civil War 6 Feb 1861 in Gauley Bridge, WV.

This Haynes line is suppose to be part of Gov. John Haynes but I have yet to find the connection.

complexion, thick lips, talks thick or hoarse; he is a field hand but has
for two years partially worked in a blacksmith shop. The above reward will
be paid for his delivery at Mount Hill, Abbeville district, or any jail in
the state of South Carolina, or fifty dollars for proof to convict any
person having conveyed him out of this state, or unlawfully traded him in

LANDS FOR SALE
The subscriber offers for sale the Plantation on which he lives, three and a
half miles above Hamburg, lying on the Savannah River, containing about Five
Hundred Acres of Land. On the premises are a two story comfortable dwelling
house in the Piney Woods, out houses, a Grist Mill, Cotton Gin carried by
water, and a small Fishery attached to it.
Also for sale, a Plantation in Barbour County, Alabama, eight miles from the
market town Eufaula, containing Nine Hundred and Sixty Acres of Land, one
third cleared and under a good fence. It has a two story dwelling house, out

Committed to the Jail of Abbeville District on the 7th inst., a negro man
who gave his name as HARRISON, and said that he belongs to James BLACKWELL
of Edgefield District near Freeland's Store. Said boy is about 25 or 30
years of age, six feet high, black complexion and appears to be quite an
intelligent negro. The owner is requested to come forward, prove property,

Ranaway from the plantation in Lincoln county, Georgia, of the estate of
John S. WALTON, deceased, about the middle of June last, a negro man named
EPHRAIM. He is aobut twenty-two years of age, five feet six inches high, of
dark complexion, and weights about one hundred and forty pounds. He has a
good countenance and owing to a wart on his tongue, his speech is somewhat
altered. He has been supposed to be lurking about in Willington, South
Carolina and has a brother in Augusta, Georgia. The above reward will be
paid for his delivery or confinement to any Jail so that he can be
recovered. The address of the subscriber is Philomath, Oglethorpe county,

RANAWAY
Ranaway, from the subscriber, about the 15th of August last, my negro named
HARRY. He is between 50 and 55 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high,

for his apprehension and delivery to me. My boy has a wife at Mrs. Peggy
Wardlaw's and may be in that neighborhood, or is it quite likely he is in

PROCLAMATION OF GOVERNOR
Executive Department
Whereas, information has reached me that an atrocious murder was commited
upon John McDANIEL of Barnwell, by six young men, among whom were Seaborn E.
FARMER and William G. TOBIN; and whereas the aforesaid FARMER and TOBIN have
made their escape. Now be it known in order that they may be brought to
trial, I, John H. Means the Governor, do issue this my proclamation offering
a reward of Five Hundred Dollars for the delivery of both or two hundred and
fifty for the deliver of either of them to the Jailor of Barnwell District.
FARMER is about 25 or 28 years old, 5 feet 8 inches high; well made, fair
complexion, blue eyes, light hair, two of his front teeth slightly broken
off. Has a scar on his cheek about an inch and a half long made by the cut
of a knife.
TOBIN is 18 or 19 years old, 5 feet 11 inches high, fair complexion, very
little beard, light hair, white teeth, thick lips, well made and is badly
scarred on the right arm and shoulder. This 5th day of July 1851. J.H.

DESPERATE BATTLE WITH A DEER
Not long since, two little boys, sons of J.F. CRAWFORD of this District, one
seven years of age and the other nine years of age, were returning from
school when they were fiercely pounced upon by a tame buck roaming at large
over the county. The first attack was upon the younger boy who stood his
ground with the resolution of a Camisard; the older one in the meantime was
coming to his assistance.
The little fellows after a few passes, however, discovered to their dismay
that the long horns and sharp feet of the enraged deer were very dangerous
weapons, and the one first attacked was quickly hurled to the ground
exhausted and bleeding. The maddened animal then turned upon the other who
urged his little brother to seize the opportunity and make his escape across
a neighboring fence. He sprang for it with his remaining strength, and was
in the act of leaping over when he was again set upon and received a deep
wound in his back.
At this moment, a negro man coming up, rescued the young combatants from
their perilous situation, and they were carried home bruised and bleeding
from head to foot. Besides the wound in the back of the younger brother, the
older one had received a horn in his mouth which penetrated the cheek near
the ear, producing an ugly gash. Their clothing, even to their socks, were
stripped off of them in shreds.

RANAWAY
Ranaway from the owner James SMITH, in Anderson District, a negro boy BOB,
about 30 years of age, about 5 feet 10 inches high, black complexion, medium
size, weight about 160 pounds. The said negro left on Sunday evening the
14th inst. The owner is now on his way to Texas. Any information concerning
said boy will be communicated to Robert SMITH residing near Cokesbury in
Abbeville district who will pay charges and take him in custody. James

I will pay the above reward to any one who will lodge my boy RICHARD in
Abbeville Jail. The said boy RICHARD is black, about 6 feet high and stout.
I have reason to believe that he is somewhere in the neighborhood above

Two negroes belonging to Gen. McDUFFIE were killed on Friday last by two
others, who were acting in the capacity as drivers. We have not been to
learn fully the paticulars of the sad affair. The murderers have been
committed to jail and will soon be put on trial, when all the facts in
connection with it will be developed.

COMMITTED TO JAIL
Committed to the Jail of this district as a Runaway on the 9th inst., a
negro man who says his name is Abram and that he belongs to Henry SPIKES,
living near Cambridge. He further says that he was hired to J.M. GOLDING and
that he ran away from him. Abram appears to be about 60 to 70 years of age.
The owner is requested to come forward, prove property, pay charges and take

Whereas, information has been received at this Department that an atrocious

Marion District, by John BEASLEY, on the body of Jane RUSS of the aforesaid
district, and that the said John BEASLEY has fled from justice.
Now know ye that so that justice may be done, and that the said John BEASLEY
may be brought to legal trial for his offense as aforesaid, I do hereby
offer a reward of One Hundred Dollars for his apprehension and delivery into
any jail in this state.
John Beasley is described as being about 35 years of age, a painter by
trade, 5 feet 7 inches high,a bright mulatto, has a scar under his left jaw
said to have made by a bite in a fight, is thick set and well made, quick
spoken and of proud carriage, with kinky hair. When last heard of he was
near Lumberton in Robertson county, North Carolina.

FIFTY DOLLAR REWARD
Ran away from Hamburg, S.C. last December, my carpenter HANDY. The above
reward will be given to anyone who will lodge him safely in the Augusta,
Charleston or Savannah jail. He is a mulatto, about thirty-five years old,
somewhat above ordinary height, full black eyes, bushy head, square built,
parrot toed. He was badly burned when a boy on his foot and leg, which
caused two of his toes to turn up. He took away with him two hundred and
sixty dollars. It is said that he hired a white man to take him to New York.
It is also said that he is in Abbeville district on Rocky River, harbored by
his sister who lives on the premises of Jonathan JOHNSON. But he is probably

MURDER OF CAPT. VANCE
In a previous issue we mentioned the apprehension and lodgement in jail of
the negro fellow Dave. It was discovered that two white men named KIRBY and
LEE were likewise implicated and accordingly a search was made which soon
resulted in the arrest of both. It appears from the statement made by Dave,
and which is strengthened by KIRBY, that the act was committed by LEE, who
in order to evade subsequent detection, employed slugs instead of balls for
the purpose. They both admit that they were present but deny having aided in
the murder.
KIRBY having became evidence for the state, may by this means escape the
extreme penalty of the law, but the doom of the other two is almost certain.
It can hardly be doubted that their lives will pay the forfeit. KIRBY and
LEE have been brought to jail. The Laurensville Herald, the 13th inst.

My grandmother Dorothy was a very lovely Lady. She was Baptist and believed strongly in our Lord. She also believed in speaking her mind which she did often.
She was involved in the World War I Widow's and in her church. She loved her family and was a devoted mother. Her Husband George Edgar Robertson war a WWI Veteran who got muster gassed.
She worked at JcPenny's doing the books, in 1917 she worked at Johnson Biscuit Company

DRAGONS

I'd like to make peace with all the dragons in my head- all
those dark creatures who came in the open door of my childhood and bedded down.
I've denied them, all the same I've fed them rather well.
They've grown fat on my hatred, multiplied like rabbits in the warm nest of my obsession, over populated my psyche with their kids. I'm very kind to other peoples dragons, It's my own I'm not able to forgive.

I am holding all my dragon's by the their tails, I'd like

to meet them face to face, get to know them, where they came from, why they came.

It's hard to love my enemies, Lord-

To make peace with intrusive creatures who move in
first then signd those long term leases in my head.

Please come in and help me face the dragons. (help me not to run if it breathe's a little fire).

I'd like to meet a really scaly monster, shake his hand. You know I'm not some princess in a palace, who thinks it rather nice to kiss a prince.

But if I learn to love that ugly dragon, could you change her to a princess before too long?

"Patches the Clown"

"Patches the Clown" was born in 1979 in Bismarck, ND at McCabe United Methodist Church.

She started the "Holy Fools" Clowning for Christ. She went before the Governor of North Dakota twice and had April 1st declared as "Holy Fools Day". She also Started Clown Alley.

In May 1985 I my dad worked for Consolidated Frieghtways and was transfered to Peru, IL where my mom also had the Governor of Illinois declare April 1st as "Holy Fools Day".

While living in Peru, IL Patches went to Illinois Valley Community College for Clown College.

She belongs to the Clowns of America International, The World Clown Association. She started several Chapters in Peru, IL and they branched off to Moline, IL, Rockford, IL and Peoria, IL.

Patches was inducted into the Clown Hall of Fame in Wisconsin.

She died 13 Febuary 1880 in Preston, Randolph, IL. She

was married on 20 August 1829 in Randolph County, IL to

Millington Couch born 28 January 1809 in Randolph County,

IL he died 20 Febuary 1849.

Mary Jane Baird's parents were, James Baird born 1782 in

Abbeville, SC and died 7 June 1851 in Randolph County, IL. He

married on 1805 in Abeville, SC to Prudence Gibson who was

born 1785 in Abeville, SC. She died 25 August 1843 in Randolph,

County, IL.

James Baird's parents were, John Baird born 1754 Ireland,

died August 1803 in Abbeville, SC. he married Lilias McCurken.

Abbeville County has a rich and colorful history that traces back to the 1700s. The county was formed in 1758 and stretches from the Savannah River to the Saluda River across the upstate and encompasses the towns of Abbeville, Calhoun Falls, Donalds, Due West, and Lowndesville. Abbeville is named after a town in France located in northern France only 20 miles from the Atlantic coastline. Abbeville County South Carolina sits along the Savannah River separating South Carolina and Georgia.

My boyfriend and I are truck drivers (I am in the process) and recently we stopped in Peru, IL where my folks live and while my mom was at work my dad came to the truck stop and we sat in Denny's talking. He started to tell me a story about when he was around four years old he would help his dad with the mules and threshing. The mules names were JO and Jack. He spoke of his father (Frederick William Kubberness Jr.) and how he had a special way with horses and mules, my dad's horse Buster would get skittish around bushes and his father noticed this once and walked over to the horse and talked to him and he never got skittish again.. They used the mules for threshing because they worked together better than horses did. My daddy said he always got teased about having mules instead of horses and he hated it.

One day my daddy was leading a new horse around his dad had gotten and he he yelled for his momma to come out and look. She was busy in the house and he had to keep calling her. She finally came to the door and my daddy was so excited to show her how he could walk around and lead the horse so well. A while later his dad told him to leave the horse alone and daddy would cry and ask to take the horse and his dad always said "No" so he would go running to his mom and cry that his daddy wouldn't let him lead that horse no more. He now realizes that his mom told his dad not to let him lead the horse because he was too little and could get hurt. But all those years his dad never said it was because your momma said so.

Later as he grew up he did get his own horse he names Buster. See picture's of him and his sister Betty.

Threshing History:

Threshing is the process of loosening the edible part of cereal grain (or other crop) from the scaly, inedible chaff that surrounds it. It is the step in grain preparation after harvesting and before winnowing, which separates the loosened chaff from the grain. Threshing does not remove the bran from the grain.

Threshing may be done by beating the grain using a flail on a threshing floor. Another traditional method of threshing is to make donkeys or oxen walk in circles on the grain on a hard surface. A modern version of this in some areas is to spread the grain on the surface of a country road so the grain may be threshed by the wheels of passing vehicles.

However, in developed areas it is now mostly done by machine, usually by a combine harvester, which harvests, threshes, and winnows the grain while it is still in the field.

The cereal may be stored in a threshing barn.

Gladys Mae (my grand aunt) born 25 December 1904 in Elgin, Antelope, Nebraska. Died 25 January 1996 in Sioux City, Woodbury, Iowa, Raymond Jacob Couch (my grand uncle) born 9 June 1901 in Elgin, Antelope, Nebraska. Died April 1930 in Iowa.

The second picture is Carrie Phyllis Couch.

The last picture we can only identify Carrie, my grandmother Dorothy and her husband George Edgar Robertson, Earl James Couch, and a person named Pete we do not know if he's a relative or friend of the family.

I am hoping someone can help us identify some of these people, this would be a wonderful treasure if they are missing links to our family tree.

Rudolf II (died July 11, 937) was king of Upper Burgundy (912-937), Lower Burgundy (Provence) (933-937), and Italy (effective, 922-926-claim abandoned 933). He was the son of Rudolf I, king of Upper Burgundy, and it is presumed that his mother was his father's known wife, Guilla of Provence. He married Bertha of Swabia.

Following his ascent to the throne in 912, Rudolf was asked by several Italian nobles to intervene in Italy on their behalf against Emperor Berengar in 922. Having entered Italy, he was crowned King of the Lombards at Pavia. In 923, he defeated Berengar at Piacenza; Berengar was murdered the following year, possibly at the instigation of Rudolf. The king then ruled Upper Burgundy and Italy together, residing alternately in both kingdoms.

However, in 926 the Italian nobility turned against him and requested that Hugh of Arles, the effective ruler of Provence (or Lower Burgundy), rule them instead. Rudolf returned to Upper Burgundy to protect himself, assuring Hugh's coronation as King of Italy in the process. The Italians then switched sides again, declaring that they wished for Rudolf to reclaim the throne. To prevent this, Hugh and Rudolf signed a treaty in 933, granting Rudolf rule of Lower Burgundy in exchange for his renunciation of all claims on the Italian throne. He married his daughter Adelaide to Hugh's son Lothar. The two Burgundian kingdoms unified, Rudolf ruled until his death in 937. He was succeeded by Conrad.

Frederick William Kubbernus SR (Johann Fredrich Theodor Kubbernus) was born 5 November 14 in Levin, Demmin, Mscklenburg-Vorpommon, Germany. He died 26 Jun 1930 Flandeau, moody, South Dakota. He was buried in Arlington Cemetery in Arlington, Kingsbury, South Dakota.

He was my Great grandfather on my dad's side. (Adoted side).

I seem to have a lot of brick walls I run into on my dad's side of my family tree. First he was adopted and I do have his real mom's side that was given to me from his Aunt Catherine Oswald. But his adopted father's side can be difficult as well.

Some have told me not to bother with my dad's adopted side because they aren't blood. But my Gramma Kub was a big influence on my life and as far as I am concerned she will always be my gramma. I feel both sides are important to the future ancestor's to come. So here's a surname I have been working on.

Party Punch

2qt Tropical Koolade
1 qt Sherbert (any flavor) only add a 1/3 of it to start with
2 litter bottle of white soda Sierra Mist, Sprite, 7-UP

Mix into a punch bowl add Sherbert last letting it sit in the middle of bowl.

Drink up!!!!
